Seasonal nutrition: tips & recipe ideas

Today, almost all foods are available to us in the supermarket all year round - whether in season or not. For example, you can buy tomatoes 365 days a year. All berries or exotic fruits are placed on supermarket shelves or flown in from distant countries through human assistance. This means: If you want to eat seasonally, you should always keep an eye on the origin and therefore the regionality. Eating seasonally and regionally represents a sustainable diet that conserves important resources on our planet.

Freshly grown vegetables should be eaten in season

Reasons for a seasonal diet

Eating seasonally has several important reasons: taste, freshness and of course environmental protection. Because products that are in season not only taste much better, but because they are ripe they also have more vitamins and are therefore healthier. They have a higher nutrient content and are easier to digest due to their higher degree of freshness. Try tomatoes in winter and tomatoes in summer - there's a world of difference: watery, tasteless tomatoes vs. sweet, fruity tomatoes in summer. Flavors can develop better through optimal growth and ripening conditions and are not harvested too early like imported foods. After harvesting, they are consumed promptly and therefore have a much fresher taste. In addition, the environment is happy with a seasonal diet. Due to the lower resource consumption of grown outdoor products, CO2 emissions are significantly saved. A long transport route to supermarket shelves or resource-intensive cultivation in greenhouses leads to much higher energy and waste expenditure, which in turn has a positive impact on climate change.

Tips - how do you shop seasonally?

There are now more and more offers from regional farmers or startups that have made it their mission to offer regional and seasonal products, which they often deliver directly to your home. It is therefore worth researching on the internet for regional organic boxes or farm shops etc.

Or how about you just pay a visit to the farmer next door and see if you can spot a small farm shop. Of course, weekly markets are also a great opportunity to buy regional and seasonal fruit and vegetables. In the supermarket you should always pay attention to the origin and have a feeling for when products can be grown outdoors.
