How can I reduce my electricity consumption?

Nowadays it is becoming more and more important to save electricity and therefore money as energy costs continue to rise and CO2 emissions become higher worldwide.

Although intervention by governments and large companies is absolutely critical here, there are some ways we can personally save more electricity and thus reduce our monthly electricity bills.

Yes OK, we all know we should turn off lights and take a shower instead of a bath. We have a few more tips for you that can contribute to a lower bill and lower CO2 emissions.

Unplug unused devices

A major power guzzler in a household is a device that is switched on day and night. Sometimes these devices need to be plugged in at all times - of course you shouldn't turn off the freezer or refrigerator at night.

However, other devices can be unplugged as soon as you leave the house without damaging their function. If you're sleeping or away for the weekend, you usually don't need WiFi. So simply unplug the router as soon as you leave the house.

The annual electricity bill for a router is around 32 euros: If you turn it off at night, you could save around 11 euros and 53 kg of CO2 in a year.

To illustrate CO2 emissions, according to the Federal Environment Agency, each person should produce a maximum of 1 ton of CO2 per year in order to combat progressive global warming. This annual saving from a single router is 5% of your ideal consumption. So with the simple push of a button on a small device, we can do a lot.

Saving electricity in the bathroom

In addition, simple changes to the bathroom can save a lot of money and CO2. In total, you can save 490 KG of CO2 per year if you install an energy-saving shower head and turn off the hot water circulation. This doesn't mean that showering has to be cold and uncomfortable.

The shower head simply enables economical water distribution, while switched off hot water circulation only allows warm water to flow after a few seconds.

Don't worry: saving electricity doesn't always mean having to put in extra effort. Some options are not only completely free, but actually require less time and effort.

Saving electricity in the kitchen

How many times have you been too impatient to wait for the oven to heat up? In the future, we recommend becoming a little more impatient: According to smartricity.de, you would save 45 kilograms of Co2 and 20 euros a year if you forgo preheating.

And yes, except for a few specific dishes, it is completely safe to put food directly in the oven without preheating it in advance. Perfect for those who don't want to wait!

You can also save energy when cooking on the stove: heat your water in the kettle instead of on the stove. You save a few minutes of time and up to 40% of your electricity consumption. Shorter waiting time, bigger savings.
