Peaceful Fashion - Vegan clothing

A leather jacket, a wool sweater, a down jacket - these items of clothing clearly have animals in them. But what about the rain jacket and the pretty silk scarf?
When it comes to clothing made from animal materials, we first think of the obvious. However, your closet may contain more animals than you think. Would you like to know which materials of animal origin can be hidden in textiles? Then you are right here.

The list of animal materials in clothing and textiles is long. In addition to leather, down, fur, wool and buttons made of bone, mother of pearl or shells, there are also silk and some glues that are found in sneakers, for example.

There are now many creative alternatives to animal products. Have you ever heard of pineapple leather ? Or from kapok , the plant down ? If not, the next section will definitely be exciting for you. Here we present some plant-based alternatives and synthetic innovations.

Vegan leather can be made from cork, pineapple, mushrooms or apples, for example - and has the practical properties of animal leather, such as robustness, tear resistance or water-repellent properties. Another alternative is a type of leather made from paper called Vegatex or SnapPap.

In winter, vegans don't have to freeze, even without a down jacket . Jackets, for example, can be easily lined with fabrics made from corn fibers. These have a high fill power and insulate very well against the cold. The items of clothing with this lining are also washable and can even be tumble dried. But kapok, a hollow fiber made from the pods of the kapok tree, also provides optimal protection against bitter cold.

Your coziest sweater can also be made of cotton or hemp fibers instead of sheep's wool . What is also used at this point are cellulose fibers from wood, coconut fibers or SeaCell - a yarn made from dried algae and cellulose.

And for a chic, silky shine you can simply use vegan silk . This consists, for example, of agave or soy fibers.

Exciting, right?

Is vegan clothing expensive?

In fact, you don't necessarily have to dig deeper into your pockets than you otherwise would if you go on an animal-free shopping spree. Many items of clothing that we wear every day, even without paying attention to it, are vegan. For example, T-shirts made of cotton, jeans if they do not have a leather label on the waistband, or sports shorts made of polyester and elastane. Clothing or accessories made from special materials may be more expensive than their animal counterparts, as they are often produced by sustainable labels. But there are many inexpensive options. For example, it is also worth checking out various (vegan) online shops or second-hand stores.

The general rule is: small steps are big.
Of course, if you've decided to pay more attention to vegan clothing, you shouldn't get rid of all your non-vegan clothing at once. If you threw it all away, it would be more unsustainable than keeping it and wearing it until it's no longer good.

Keep our tips in mind the next time you go shopping and just pay attention to the material. You're already doing the animals a huge favor. 🐑

Velvet and silk - did you know...?

Silk is obtained from the cocoons of silkworms . The caterpillars pupate by winding the silk produced in their mouths around themselves, creating a long silk thread. Before they can hatch, however, they are killed by hot water. This prevents them from damaging their cocoons while hatching. The threads are then rolled up by hand or by machine and further processed.

Statistics from PETA show that around 1.6 trillion caterpillars die every year to produce silk - although silk only makes up 0.2 percent of all textile fibers. However, this number excludes all the animals that are not processed at all due to illnesses caused by the breeding conditions and the like and die beforehand.

Bees dying for rain jackets

And what does the rain jacket actually mean?
In fact, rainwear is sometimes impregnated with beeswax , which gives the garment water-repellent properties. The problem of beekeeping is often not immediately obvious at first glance. However, this is factory farming with all the typical problems associated with this form of farming.

Contrary to popular belief, industrial beekeeping and keeping does not prevent bee deaths . In addition to the mutilation and regular killing to replace the queen with more productive successors, many bees are also crushed and killed during the harvesting of beeswax and honey .
